Michael Gendreau is a legendary DJ, producer, and remixer coming out of the Montreal disco scene. Starting out as a mobile DJ spinning at school dances and parties in Canada, Michael eventually became the resident DJ at a club called the Intersection in St. Jerome. This was in 1976 when the eyes of the world were on Montreal because of the Olympics. This was a great time for Michael and the clubs because they were packed night after night.
Michael soon went on to spin at the biggest clubs in Montreal. He was also lucky to become the music director at many local radio stations. This also led him to be the DJ on the premier disco TV show called "Et ca tourne." It was here that he met Jermaine Jackson, Skyy, James Brown, and many others. He began working for Unidisc Records re-editing many of the biggest hits of the day like; Frankie Smith's "Double Dutch Bus, Imagination's "Just An Illusion", and the Flirts' "Passion." Michael also helped to create the famous bootleg disco mix, "Let's Do It." A producer by the name of Michel Ali handed him a rough bootleg mix of current hits. Being in such poor quality, Gendreau took many of the songs on the mix and recreated the edit making it more fluid and with much better sound quality. The result was the first release on the Stars on 45 record label. The original mix contained more Beatles tracks but Gendreau felt that the Beatles might not go over to well in the disco clubs. He compromised by putting the JB's at the end of the medley to entice the dancers back to floor. |
