The Boys Own crew began has as a just a bunch of lads who wanted to party, and talk about football and music. It wasn't long before the crew began throwing bigger parties and eventually starting their own label, Junior Boys Own. Junior ended up being home to some of the greatest dance acts of the 90s including the Chemical Brothers and Underworld.
Started in 1986 the Boys Own fanzine began as a way to communicate to their clubbing friends who didn't have any sort of voice or identity in the media. The only media reporting on clubbing at the time (the Face and I-D) were just coming at it from the point of view of middle class art students. Around this time Boys Own began throwing parties under the railway near London Bridge. Promoted as a party for the true fans of Balearic music not just the new acid heads. Boys Own sloagan was I'd rather be dead than acid ted displaying the Boys Own's displeasure with the bandwagon of headonistic new ravers interested more in E than the experience of the music. The original crew at the time included Terry Farley, Andrew Weatherall, Cymon Eckel, Steve Mayes, and Steve Hall. Both Farley and Weatherall were DJs at the legendary Shoom club.
Through being considered by many in London at the time as kings of the dancefloor, Weatherall and Farley were soon getting requests to remix and produce many high profile artists such as Michael Jackson, the Happy Mondays, Kylie Minogue and even help to produce the classic Primal Scream album, "Screamadelica."
The Boys Own label began in 1991 by Steve Hall and Terry Farley. They intially released records by DSK, Bocca Juniors(members included Andrew Weatherall, Pete Heller, Terry Farley & Hugo Nicolson), and Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart. By 1993 the label name was changed to Junior Boys Own and started releasing tracks by Underworld, X-Press 2, and Black Science Orchestra. This was the golden era for Junior releasing top selling and critically acclaimed albums like the Chemical Brothers, "Exit Dust", Underworld's "Dubnobasswithmyheadman", and underground dance hits like Black Science Orchestra's "Where Were YOU", Xpress 2's "Muzik", and the Ballistic Brother's "I'll Fly Away."
The Junior label is still releasing tracks today including "Make You Mine" by Zoo Brazil and "No Refunds" by Content. Farley continues to throw parties in the spirit of Boys Own at his Faith parties. Starting in 1999 with the help of Bill Brewster, Dave Jarvis, Stuart Patterson, and Leo Elstob they throwing amazing parties keeping with the spirit of London house music. Faith threw parties at Fabric, Pacha, and Turnmills including some of the world's most renowed DJs like Don Letts, Derrick Carter, and Ashley Beadle. The success of these parties led to the creation of another fanzine dedicated to house music, Faith.
